City Council Recognized Outstanding Individuals During Monday’s Meeting

LAREDO, TX— The City of Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño and Council Members awarded several recognitions to outstanding individuals from the community during the City Council meeting held on Monday, Monday 20, 2023, for their achievements in different branches of culture, sports, or recreational activities, while representing Laredo in other cities and organizations. The City of Laredo is pleased to continue presenting these recognitions in honor of the accomplishments of locals who represent this town through their professional careers and/or extracurricular activities. Monday’s honorees were:

Webb County Heritage Foundation & the Gabriela Mendoza-Garcia Ballet Folklórico

The Webb County Heritage Foundation & the Gabriela Mendoza-Garcia Ballet Folklórico were presented with a local recognition for receiving the “Dance in the Public Sphere” by the Dance Studies Association. This award recognizes renewed and new forms of public access and activism. This collaboration helped tell a story of music, movements, and histories that bring people across Mexico and the United States together.

United South High School Lady Panthers Basketball Team

District 1 Council Member, Gilbert Gonzalez, and District 3 Council Member, Melissa Cigarroa, together with Mayor Dr. Trevino, proudly recognized the United South High School Lady Panthers Basketball Team for an outstanding season and for receiving several titles including: 3-Peat District Champions, Back-to-Back Bi-District Champions, back-to-back Area Champions, Regional Quarter Champions, and Regional Semi-finalists. Both Council Members congratulated the team members and especially their coaches and parents, for offering their full support and perseverance to accomplish these great goals.

Additionally, Bridgette Tello was recognized for being awarded the 30-6A MVP, playing with the United South High School basketball team.

Angel Leon, Utilities Department

Angel Leon is a Utilities Department employee. Mr. Leon was recognized for being selected as the recipient of the Water Environment Association of Texas Sidney L. Allison Award. This award is presented to a person or entity that has made significant contributions to the engineering, science and/or operations and maintenance of wastewater. This is the first time an employee of the City of Laredo has received this award. Director of Utilities, Arturo Garcia, Jr., presented Mr. Leon and explained that he has been serving the City of Laredo for 15 years.

Jorge Hilario Rangel II

District 2 Council Member, Daisy Campos-Rodriguez, presented a special recognition to Jorge Hilario Rangel II, for placing 4th in the Super Heavyweight Division at the Regional Powerlifting meet in Edinburg, Texas, on March 11, 2023. Representing Cigarroa High School, Jorge squatted 660 lbs, benched pressed 425 lbs, and deadlifted 565 lbs, for a total of 1650 lbs, qualifying him for the State Powerlifting Meet to be held on March 25, 2023, in Abilene, Texas.

LPD Officer Gerardo Montemayor

Laredo Police Officer Gerardo Montemayor was recognized by District 5 Council Member Ruben Gutierrez, Jr., for placing 1st in Division III-Metrics Novice at the 10th annual Capitol of Texas Motorcycle Police Chute Out in Buda, Texas on March 3, 2023. The Chute Out is a police motorcycle skills and training competition held annually to raise funds for the Sunshine Kids Foundation and other local non-profit organizations in Hays, Williamson, and Travis Counties.
