LAREDO, Texas—On January 18, the Laredo City Council voted to appoint District 7 Council Member Vanessa Perez as Mayor Pro Tempore during the first meeting after new council members were elected. Ms. Perez now assumes the role of Mayor Pro Tem following former District 2 Council Member Vidal Rodriguez, whose term concluded last December.

Within this new role, Mayor Pro Tem Perez will assist in various duties and serve as mayor when Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino is not available. Ms. Perez will serve as chair of city council meetings during the absence or disability of the mayor, as per City Ordinance. Her service will terminate upon the return of the mayor from absence and will hold this title until her successor is nominated and confirmed or until her term as council member expires.

Vanessa Perez was born and raised in Laredo, Texas. She has a business degree from the Red McCombs School of Business from the University of Texas at Austin, with a concentration in Marketing. After college, she became a certified public educator in Texas and taught the high-need area of mathematics at the secondary level for eight years. Vanessa Perez is married to Andres since 2011 and together they have three children.

During her two years in office, Ms. Perez has advocated for a fair and transparent government, better planning, zoning and infrastructure, fair representation, inclusion, economic development, health, safety, and overall better policies and practices for a better city.

“I’m honored to accept the title of Mayor Pro-Tempore and would like to thank my colleagues for their vote of support. I look forward to serving the citizens of Laredo in this capacity,” said Mayor Pro Tem Vanessa Perez.
