Laredo, TX—Today, Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) hosted a ‘Conversations with Cuellar’ to discuss the pending vote on the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. He explained how it will affect South Texas, specifically the 28thCongressional District.

For decades, infrastructure in Texas, and around the country, has suffered from a systemic lack of investment. This bill is a once-in-a-lifetime historic opportunity to repair infrastructure and bring thousands of good-paying jobs to our communities.

“I remain committed to passing this historic infrastructure bill—a bill that will bring 2 million good-paying union jobs per year for the next 10 years. The bill will also allocate $30 billion for infrastructure investment in my home state of Texas. We have been talking about the expansion of the bridges along the border and it is crucial that we also provide the necessary infrastructure funding to support these expansions. In Texas alone, there are 818 bridges and over 19,400 miles of highway in poor condition. Commute times have increased by 11.4% since 2011 and on average, each driver pays $709 per year in costs associated with driving on roads in poor condition. This historic bill will allow us to rebuild our infrastructure while focusing on climate change mitigation, resilience, equity, and safety,” said Congressman Cuellar. “Furthermore, the bill will provide broadband internet to thousands of families, improve our nation’s airports, and deliver clean drinking water to every American through the elimination of lead service lines and pipes.”

American infrastructure is in urgent need of this investment. The bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act presents a historic opportunity to upgrade and modernize this infrastructure. The bill will strengthen competitiveness as a nation while also tackling the global climate change challenge.
