Laredo, Texas –During a proclamation ceremony, District 3 Council Member Mercurio Martinez, III, on behalf of Mayor Pete Saenz, along with the American Cancer Society, proclaimed the month of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Laredo, Texas. The purpose of this month is to help raise awareness about breast cancer prevention, take steps to reduce the risk of getting diagnosed, and remember those individuals who lost their lives to this disease, including those who continue to fight it.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is still the second leading cause of cancer death in women, and more than 20,900 women in Texas and 281,550 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year.

The American Cancer Society provides education and guidance to help people reduce their risk of getting breast cancer; offers comprehensive support to individuals facing the disease; funds innovative breast cancer research; and takes action to help make breast cancer awareness a priority in Texas. The American Cancer Society recommends that if you are a woman 40 years of age and older, talking to your health care provider about the breast cancer screening plan that is best for you. The month of October is designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month when we honor those touched by the disease and raise awareness about how we can help fight for a world without breast cancer.
