United ISD Board of Trustees Vote to Observe a Two-Week period of Virtual Learning

Courtesy Carmen Rendon,

(Laredo, Texas)-The United ISD Board of Trustees has voted to observe a two-week period where students will return to remote/virtual learning. In an effort to protect the health and well-being of its students and staff, the District has temporarily changed its teaching schedule to remote learning at home from Monday, February 1 through Monday, February 15, 2021. This two-week window was decided to help the community flatten the infection rates curve. All students will be required to stay home and participate in remote learning.

United ISD plans to conduct an asynchronous day of instruction on Monday, February 15, 2021, upon which date staff is expected to return to their duties, and students will log in to their classes from home. Beginning Tuesday, February 16, 2021, students who attend classes in person will return to campus for instruction.

Because of the alarming uptick in COVID-19 cases, we ask that employees be mindful of social distancing and avoid any unnecessary outings or gatherings. It is up to each of us to ensure that our community recovers from this surge of cases. Please continue to do your part in reducing the number of cases in our community, and thereby keeping our families safe.

Immediate supervisors will provide their employees with further instruction regarding modified work schedules.

At the beginning of the academic year, United ISD provided students with personal electronic devices and Mi-Fi devices to ensure their ability to log in to their classes. For assistance with issues related to electronic devices, call (956) 473-6201.

The United ISD Child Nutrition Department will continue to provide Grab & Go Meals during this two week period.

Superintendent Santos stated, “The safety and health of our students, employees, and community continues to be of the utmost importance to our Board of Trustees. In an effort to flatten the curve, the Board made clear that students are to stay home, while employees shall work an abbreviated schedule. As a District, we are doing what we have to do to protect our United ISD family, while remaining under the parameters of TEA guidelines. I want to thank our Board Members for allowing this partial shutdown in the hope that we are able to slow the spread.”
