Laredo International Airport Initiates Terminal Improvement Plan

LAREDO, TX—The Laredo International Airport has begun work on a Terminal Improvement Plan (TIP) that is set to bring much needed amenities and upgrades to the airport. This will elevate the traveler experience for anyone going through the city’s airport, while also stimulating local jobs, economic development and construction.

Overall, the TIP will include:

· An expansion to the terminal building beyond the airline ticket counters for a new Passenger Security Screening Checkpoint

· Improved amenities such as public gathering and event space, as well as business meeting areas

· Improvements to concessions space for food and beverage offerings

· Other passenger amenities including mother’s room, family assistance, as well as service animal relief areas

The first phase will include the reconfiguration of the public restrooms and redesign of the concession space on the first floor. As part of this update, the Villa Laredo Restaurant will continue to serve passengers on the second floor of the terminal. It will offer updated vending options, along with a range of new items and will allow for cashless payment. These renovations are on track to be completed by the end of 2021.

This is one of the biggest projects the airport has taken on to make it an airport of the future, so some growing pains are expected. Airport administration is working closely with stakeholders to ensure that disruptions to the travel experience are minimal to none.

“We are looking forward to presenting the residents and the community with these much-needed airport improvements,” said Airport Director Jeffrey Miller. “We will continue to work toward long-term growth and successful development for the region in the future.”

The funding for the plan is sourced from the $18.5 million in CARES Act relief from the Federal Aviation Administration. In addition to the TIP, the funding will also support an Economic Relief Incentive Program for airport tenants that will provide them with payment options to aid them through financial hardships they may be facing due to the ongoing pandemic.

“This year’s pandemic has caused an even greater need for innovation within our airport as the way we travel is forever changed,” said City Manager Robert A. Eads. “We are fortunate enough to have received these funds that will allow us to grow our airport operations and ultimately provide even more opportunities for both our casual and business travelers.”
