United ISD Prepares for 2020-2021 School Year

Courtesy Lauren Cavazos,

(Lare4do, Tx)-United ISD’s Board of Trustees and Superintendent Roberto J. Santos have postponed the start of the new school year to August 24, 2020. In compliance with state and local guidelines, the District will host online REMOTE LEARNING ONLY until further notice.

United ISD will utilize a remote asynchronous instruction model beginning August 24 (the first day of school) following guidelines recently handed down by local and state officials. Asynchronous instruction does not require having the instructor and students engaged at the same time. Utilizing this method, students will learn from instruction that is not necessarily delivered in person or in real-time. This type of instruction may include various digital and online learning forms, such as prerecorded video lessons or game-based learning tasks that students complete independently, and preassigned work and formative assessments made available to students on paper.

Students in remote instruction must participate in all required coursework every day;

It is encouraged that PK-2nd grade students have an adult present who can facilitate learning each day.

In preparation for the start of the fully-online school year, United ISD has procured Chromebooks, iPads, personal hotspots, and updated technology services. Many of the devices have already been delivered, and the remainder of the devices are expected to arrive shortly after the start of the school year. The District will notify parents of the pickup schedule for devices.

Additionally, United ISD is currently in the process of acquiring internet WI-FI systems to install in twenty school buses in an effort to assist students with distance learning. These WI-FI equipped buses will be parked strategically throughout the District to provide high-speed internet connectivity to students without access in rural areas. The 20-bus fleet will have a range of a quarter-mile per bus and will be ready for use in time for the first day of school.

As information and guidelines from local, state, and federal government entities continue to evolve, the District will keep parents and students informed through phone calls, emails, UISD.net, and social media.
