UISD Dyslexia Teachers Earn Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) Designation

Courtesy Lauren Cavazos,

(Laredo, Texas) It is with tremendous pride that United ISD announces our Certified Academic Language Practitioners (CALPs).  Last year, the Section 504/Dyslexia Department set out to update the program and train all UISD Dyslexia Teachers in an effort to have them earn the respected title of CALP.  The Academic Language Therapy Association® (ALTA) is the credentialing organization which establishes, maintains, and promotes professional standards of education, practice, and conduct for Certified Academic Language Practitioners, Instructors of Certified Academic Language Practitioners, Certified Academic Language Therapists, and Qualified Instructors.

Additionally, our Elementary Dyslexia Teachers have also received training by Dr. Elsa Cardenas-Hagan in the Spanish Dyslexia Program, ESPERANZA.  It is the district’s hope that as new teachers come on board with United ISD, we will continue to provide this intense training to allow all United ISD Dyslexia teachers to achieve the title of CALP.

According to The Dyslexia Handbook, 2018: Since dyslexia is a neurobiological, language-based disability that persists over time and interferes with an individual’s learning, it is critical that identification and intervention occur as early as possible.  Standard protocol dyslexia instruction provides evidence-based, multisensory structured literacy instruction for students with dyslexia. A standard protocol dyslexia instructional program must be explicit, systematic, and intentional in its approach. This instruction is designed for all students with dyslexia and will often take place in a small group setting.

All United ISD Dyslexia teachers have received the required instructional training.
