Grab your cowboy hats and get ready for United Independent School District’s Annual Parent Learning Summit! The western-themed event takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on October 22, 2016 at United High School located at 2811 United Avenue. The event is free and open to all UISD parents.

“We want to see as many of our parents out there,” said UISD Superintendent Roberto J. Santos. “The more parents become involved in their child’s education and in their daily activities, the more of a positive impact it will have in their child’s life.”

Coordinated through the Office of Federal and State Programs, the Summit will offer a wide range of informative sessions that will help parents with their children at home and in the classroom. This year’s featured guest speakers will be David Diaz, Danny Diaz, Juanita Diaz and Coach Jimmy White on which the Disney movie McFarland USA was based on. These guest speakers have many years of experience in public speaking engagements. Additionally, United ISD is privileged to have Mrs. Juanita Diaz–mother of the Diaz brothers– present to U.I.S.D. parents her experiences as a parent of seven first-generation college graduates.

There will also be activity camps for children at the Summit. However, registration for these camps will be done the day of the event, on a first-come first served basis, and spaces are limited. These camps are for parents attending the Parent Learning Summit.

“The goal of the Parent Learning Summit is to emphasize the importance of parental engagement in every child’s life” said Dr. Alicia G. Carrillo, Executive Director of Federal and State Programs. According to a report published by the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory (SEDL), “When schools, families, and community groups work together to support learning, children tend to do better in school, stay in school longer, and like school more.”

“At the end of the day it’s up to parents to be involved in their children’s education,” commented Superintendent Santos. “Parents can ensure their child receives the full benefits of their education by being simply being involved.”
