(Laredo, Tx)-United ISD high school students who have been officially certified by the IRS for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), program are preparing income tax returns (under the guidance of their teachers), at no cost for low to moderate income families and individuals. The service will continue to be offered at all United ISD high schools through April 14, 2015. (See revised day/hour schedules by campus below)
“This is a great program because it gives students an insight into the business world,” said United ISD Superintendent Roberto J. Santos. “It allows our students to get the hands on experience they need while helping others at the same time.”
United ISD was one of the first school districts in the State to implement such a program at all of its high school campuses. It was done with students enrolled in the Financial Analysis courses offered through the District’s Career and Technical Education program. The students worked to earn their IRS certification by completing a series of lessons and passing an exam required by the agency. With this training, students have the knowledge to prepare income tax forms. At the end of each tax preparation session, the taxpayer is given a hard copy for their records and original paperwork is sent to the IRS via the e-file system. Taxpayers who are expecting refunds will be asked for their bank’s routing number and checking account number for direct deposit. When the taxpayer owes money, the student will explain payment options to the client.
The IRS certified students, under the supervision of their teacher, can prepare the following income tax returns:
· Form 1040 EZ
· Form 1040 A
· With Schedule 1, 2, 3, and EIC
· Form 1040

· Form 2441 (child and dependent care credit)
· Form 8863 (education credits)
