(Laredo, Tx)-Last Week, Administrators at Zaffirini Elementary School rewarded students for their achievements in the Accelerated Reader (AR) Program by staging a Sumo Challenge spoof. The AR program challenges students (kindergarten to 5th grade) to read a designated number of books within a specified time frame. Students accrue progress points for each book they read and those who score 85 or better on their AR comprehension tests are issued an invitation to the year-end event.
Libraian Celeste Munoa said that students look forward to the annual AR parties which, in the past, have included a gummy worm eating contest and a (pink) hair dye treatment for Principal Claudia Benavides.
Students read books, accrue points and are tested on what they’ve read.
