(Laredo, Tx)- The Laredo Independent School District’s Laredo Early College High School (ECHS) was named as one of best high schools in the nation by U.S. News and World Report in their 2013 Best High School Rankings. The ECHS is the only Laredo high school to be recognized in the annual ranking. ECHS was named as the 97th best high school in the nation and 16th in the state of Texas.
U.S. News along with the American Institute for Research collected data on more than 21,000 public high schools from 49 states and the District of Columbia. Schools were ranked within its state and nationally. The ranking evaluated schools on overall student performance on state-mandated assessments and how effectively schools educated their black, Hispanic, and economically disadvantaged students. Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exam scores were used to determine the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work.
“It is a great honor,” said Jose Cerda ECHS Principal. “It was just a matter of time. The dedication and hard work of our teachers has really paid off with this coveted ranking.”
The ECHS allows high school students to earn up to 60 hours of college credit while working toward high school graduation. The ECHS is one of a few schools located on the grounds of a four-year university. In 2006, the LISD Board of Trustees in partnership with Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), voted to create the ECHS. Initially, the school was housed in portable buildings at TAMIU. In August of 2012, students moved into the new two-story building which houses 400 students. The new $7 million building consist of 14 classrooms all equipped with 55 inch screen TV monitors for instruction, two computer labs, one science lab/classroom, administrative offices, conference room, cafeteria, an open dining space, resource/counseling/Go Center plus all required secondary spaces for 21st Century state-of-the-art learning.
“Laredo ISD is very proud of the accomplishment achieved by the students and staff at the LISD Early College High School. They should be commended for their hard work,” said Dr. Marcus Nelson, LISD Superintendent. “We have created a very successful high school that is producing dynamic college-bound students.”
