City of Laredo Has Lowest Garbage Fees in Texas

Proposed garbage and other use fee increases will still be lowest in the state

(Laredo, TX) As the start of the City of Laredo’s 2012-2013 fiscal year is set to begin on October 1, 2012, there will be increases to the garbage collection and other user fees, to not only recuperate the actual costs of these services, and also, to be able to provide the equipment needed for garbage and recycling pick-up.  Even with these fee increases, the City of Laredo will still have the lowest rates in the state of Texas.

“We understand that residents are used to the City of Laredo providing these services at a much lower fee, but the reality is, the fees charged were not high enough to keep up with rising fuel prices, increased maintenance, and a growing population,” said City Manager Carlos Villarreal.  “ However even with these increases, the City of Laredo is one of only four major cities in Texas, including Abilene, Brownsville and Lubbock that will still be providing twice weekly garbage pick-up and free branch pick-up, as well.”

Starting October 1, 2012, residents will see an additional $3 per month charge to their garbage user fee, bringing the garbage user fee to $12, making it still one of the lowest rates charged in major cities in Texas. Over the next four years, there will be an additional $1.50 per month increase, as well. The increased garbage fees will allow the City of Laredo Solid Waste Department to expand the Billie Bote recycling program, providing every resident with the coveted blue bins, hopefully making it easier for more residents to recycle, as well.

According to Villarreal, the $12 garbage fee will still include free branch pick-up that other cities, such as Corpus Christi, McAllen and San Antonio charge between $75-$180 per load.

Other fee increases that residents will see will include:  Airport; Building; Health; ITS; Library; Parks & Recreation; Planning; Traffic Safety-Parking; and Utilities.  All fee increases will help offset the cost of providing the services and maintaining a balanced budget.
