Kite Fesitval Photo and Community College Visual and Performing Arts Center Featured on 2012 Laredo YP Real Yellow Pages Directory

The new Laredo YP Real Yellow Pagessm features a front and back cover this year as the directory contains listings in English and Spanish. The English side of the directory features Guillermo Sosa’s winning photograph from the fourth Annual Spring Break Kite Festival. The Spanish side features the Laredo Community College’s (LCC) Visual and Performing Arts Center.
Nearly 80,000 copies of the directory have been produced for distribution in Laredo this year. Delivery is underway and continues through June 28. The directory will also be available to new residents and businesses throughout the year.
“Every year, we look for an image of an event or landmark that will reflect this wonderful community and this year we have both with the new Performing Arts Center and Kite Festival,” said Roland Rodriguez, YP area market manager. “We were very excited to work with the city and offer this opportunity to have a photo contest for our directory cover. The annual Spring Break Kite Festival brings families and the community together with a simple childhood activity that most of us have a fond memory of…kite flying. The photos taken by Mr. Sosa helped capture a new wonderful memory for us to share with everyone.”
The Spring Break Kite Festival is a free, family friendly event that harkens back to time-honored, affordable family entertainment, where families enjoyed spending time with each other outdoors, interacting and creating special family traditions. Amateur and professional photographers were asked to submit their digital images from the festival and the winning photo was selected by a panel of judges.
“As a professional photographer, I look primarily for the emotions that people are conveying. At the kite festival, so many families had gathered and were truly enjoying being with one another,” said Guillermo Sosa who captured this year’s winning image. “Fathers and mothers were teaching their sons and daughters how to fly kites and everyone reveled in the adventure of it all. It was an amazing, family experience that truly warranted capturing through the lens of my camera.
“There were so many wonderful pictures that truly captured not only spirit of the Kite Festival, with smiling kids, happy families, and colorful kites, but also, the beautiful of Laredo, with its environment and landscape, which can be enjoyed year-round at North Central Park,” said San Miguel District VI Council Member. “In the end, I think we selected images that take people right into the heart and memory of the Kite Festival, taken by an extremely talented photographer, Guillermo Sosa, who always aims to capture Laredo in its best light. Finally, I am so proud that this event is going to be featured on the front cover of the YP Real Yellow Pagessm.”
The Spanish side of the directory features the LCC Visual and Performing Arts Center. The 47,000 square-foot complex is a major boost for students pursuing careers or taking personal enrichment courses in the arts. The visual arts will include studios and lecture labs for ceramics, art metals, drawing painting and digital art, while in the performing arts there will be instructional rooms dedicated to the study of percussion and dance, among other amenities.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to have the new Visual and Performing Arts Center featured on this year’s YP Real Yellow Pagessm directory cover,” said Dr. Juan Maldonado, president of LCC. “The center represents the first phase of our multi-year plan to renovate and refurbish this historic campus. It allows us to bring the college up to date technologically and to accommodate growth in student enrollment. Being on the cover helps bring attention to the vision we have for the future of education at LCC and the community.”
