LISD Honors School Librarians at Luncheon

(Laredo, Tx)-Sixty LISD librarians and librarian assistants were recognized at a proclamation and awards ceremony luncheon in celebration of National Library Week. During the awards luncheon, two LISD educators were selected Librarians of the Year. Irema Trevino of Santo Nino Elementary School and Gloria Saldivar of Christen Middle School Librarian, were presented with the top honors. The event was held at the Leyendecker Elementary School Library earlier this week.
“The Library is the heart of all our campuses and our librarians are the heartbeat that makes our students and school succeed,” said Dr. Marcus Nelson, LISD Superintendent. “I want to thank all our librarians and librarian assistants for all the hard work they do to help our students achieve their goals.”
Santo Niño’s principal, Oralia Hinojosa, described Mrs. Treviño as innovative and the author of several grants including the Schoolhouse Rock grant which made a significant impact on the school community recently. “Ms. Trevino continues to act as an advocate for student growth and for assuming leadership roles and actively promoting literacy and communicates high expectations by creating avenues for students to foster their love of reading and knowledge,” continued Hinojosa
According to Christen Middle’s principal, Carlos Cruz, Saldivar has brought many positive changes to the school and collaborates with administration, teachers, staff, and the community. “She has built a good rapport with the teachers and students and ensures that they have the resources that are expected of a well rounded library,” said Cruz. “She has set her goal and surpassed the number of books circulated on her campus. Students look forward to visiting the library and spending time before school, during their lunch hour, and after school.”
Saldivar, who’s been a librarian for four years at her alma mater, said that she enjoys being able to teach new technology skills to the students and teachers at Christen Middle School. “I feel this honor should be shared with all librarians in LISD, because they all deserve the same honor,” stated Saldivar. “I would like to thank everyone that made this honor possible.”
“I am grateful for all the hard work and commitment demonstrated by our librarians each day. It is through their efforts that our libraries have truly become the core of our instructional resources and study in our schools,” said Nelson. “Our librarians and the staff on their teams are very special to our LISD experience and we are fortunate to have all of them in our school system.”
During the luncheon, Laredo Mayor Pro Tem Cindy Liendo-Espinoza read a proclamation on behalf of the City proclaiming the week of April, 9-13 as National School Library Week in Laredo. All LISD librarians and librarian assistants were also recognized with a token of appreciation on behalf of the district. Milton Elementary School, Christen Middle School, for the third year in a row, and Cigarroa High School were recognized as the schools with the most books circulated. Macdonell Elementary, Lamar Middle, and Cigarroa High Schools were recognized for having the most attendance at Family reading Night.
