(Laredo, Tx)- City of Laredo Mayor Raul G. Salinas will travel to Washington, D.C. the week of January 16th to attend the 80th Winter Meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM). The focus of the meeting is on jobs and ensuring that local government issues are not lost in this presidential election year. While in Washington, Mayor Salinas will meet with President Obama as part of a delegation of mayors. He will also chair the Conference of Mayors’ Immigration Task Force. A full copy of the agenda of the meeting may be found at http://www.usmayors.org/80thWinterMeeting/media/agenda.pdf.
“The Conference of Mayors gathers this year to ensure that the 2012 presidential candidates and Congress will honor commitments made to assist cities with the challenges we face individually and collectively as a nation. I am particularly grateful to USCM Chairman City of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa for dedicating so much of the agenda to Laredo’s priorities: jobs, security, immigration reform and port economies. In addition, it is always an honor to meet with the President of the United States. As Mayor of the City of Laredo, I have had the honor and pleasure of meeting with both Presidents Bush and Obama.”
Mayor Salinas continued, “Laredo is most fortunate to have someone like Congressman Henry Cuellar working tirelessly for Laredo in Washington. My mission at the Conference is to make sure that Laredo alone need not carry the message that immigration reform is essential for this county, and that our port economies are vital to jump starting our recovery. For instance, while we are pleased that a recent research paper by Woods and Poole Economics, Inc. finds Laredo will have highest percentage of jobs growth of any city in the nation over the next 10 years, we will continue to travel to D.C. to make such growth is a reality, not just a research paper’s conclusion.”
Mayor Salinas serves as a member of the Advisory Board of the United States Conference of Mayors and was asked by USCM President Mayor Villaraigosa to chair the Immigration Task Force in 2012. The mayor also serves as a co-chair of the Conference’s Inland Ports Subcommittee.
