Distinguished parent volunteer named Heroes for Children

(Laredo, Tx)-For the fifth year in a row, a parent volunteer from the Laredo Independent School District was recognized by the Texas State Board of Education as a “Heroes for Children” Award recipient for District One. J.C. Martin Elementary grandparent volunteer, Hilda Granados, was one of 15 volunteers from school districts across Texas honored for her significant contribution to public schools in Texas, and for outstanding contributions to the success of the Texas Public Education System.
Granados has been a parent volunteer for over 38 years. She was the very first parent volunteer at J.C. Martin Elementary School when the school opened in 1974. Since then, she has been a constant fixture at all school functions, including Open House and Progress Report Nights. She is also part of a program called SCAN – Serving Children and Adolescents in Need, where she provides input for program improvements.
Over the years, Granados has volunteered her time to tutors students in reading and math, assists teachers with any task, monitors the lunchroom, and is a strong advocate for the children.
Ms. Granados started a tradition of public service in her family that continues, as her daughter and granddaughter are also parent volunteers as J.C. Martin Elementary. In fact, Granados daughter, Sarah Ramos was last year’s Heroes for Children award recipient for District One. Granados constant presence and hard work on campus is well noted by the staff at J.C. Martin Elementary.
“It is evident she is not only here for her two grandsons, but she really does serve as a grand parental figure for the children. All of her help is greatly appreciated by all the teachers, as we have one less item to worry about,” said Cynthia Davila, J.C. Martin Parent Liaison. “As a teacher, I can attest to how she is such a great source of encouragement and has especially served as a mentor for me.”
The Heroes for Children honorees are selected by the State Board of Texas members and recognized for volunteering their time, talents and skills to help improve the public schools in their communities. Each hero received a certificate of honor, a copy of the resolution scheduled for board approval and photographs commemorating the ceremony. Each Hero also had his or her name engraved on a plaque that is permanently displayed at the Texas Education Agency headquarters in Austin, Tx.
Granados was also recently honored by LISD for her accomplishments. She was presented with a plaque during the Parental Involvement Conference and will be recognized during the October LISD Board of Trustees Meeting.
