District Modifies Student Dress Code

In an ongoing effort to ensure a safe learning environment for students and staff, the LISD Board of Trustees recently approved modifications to the Standardized Dress Code for middle and high school campuses. Beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, LISD prefers that students wear specific colors which pertain to their middle and high schools.

“The district is allowing for a one year grace period to give students time to adjust to the modified dress code before we start enforcing the rules,” said Carlos Rios, LISD Executive Director for Academic Accountability and Compliance. “LISD will enforce the rules, and expect students to follow the code of conduct or face the consequences of their actions.”

Example, students who attend Cigarroa High and its feeder school Cigarroa Middle School would wear solid blue, yellow, and white tops and navy blue, khaki, and black bottoms. Students not able to comply with the preferred colors for the 2011-2012 school year are still required to comply with the general dress code. In Instances where a student’s clothing violates the dress code, parents are called and asked to bring in appropriate attire for the student to wear. Repeated offenses will result in disciplinary action. Appropriate discipline procedures shall be followed in all cases.

Campus administrators, faculty, and staff will be monitoring the dress code beginning with the first day of school and will continue throughout the rest of the year. For the 2012-2013 school year, LISD will require that students wear only the colors that are listed in the standardized dress code.

“The modified dress code will enable administrators to look out for the safety and welfare of the all students,” Rios said. “The modifications will help identify an individual or individuals that may pose a threat or should not be on school grounds.”

Also, campus principals will have the discretion to adopt additional dress code guidelines, which must be consistent with the district’s guidelines. Each secondary campus principal will announce these additional guidelines over the PA, in letters, and shall post them prominently throughout the school.

“The district will continue to tighten up the policy, instill the consequences, and track the number of incidents,” added Rios.

The district adopted the standardized dress code during the 2008-2009 school year which states that students shall be dressed and groomed in a manner that is clean and neat and that will not cause disruptions and/or safety hazards. The intent of this dress code is to instill discipline amongst the students. The district created a policy that calls for “zero tolerance” for students who fail to comply with the dress code from the time they enter the campus.
