Laredo, TX— Mayor Salinas was is in Los Angeles at the invitation of Los Angeles Mayor and United States Conference of Mayors President Antonio Villaraigosa to assist the Conference shape its message for the coming year. Mayor Salinas serves in the leadership of the Conference on immigration, border and trade issues.
The lead message coming out of the Mayors’ meeting is that jobs and job creation has to be a part of the debt ceiling resolution. Mayor Salinas explained, “We cannot wait a year and a half for the politics to play out. We need to put America back to work today, and my suggestion is that the nation can do that by building, or in some cases, rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure. Two immediate steps that Congress can take are: passage of the Transportation bill and reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration. Laredo’s trade is based on truck traffic, and if the roads of the nation don’t function, then Laredo’s port does not operate. As for the FAA reauthorization, I would note that just yesterday Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood pointed out the failure to reauthorize the FAA could lead to the closing down of a major construction project at the Laredo International Airport. While Laredo is doing better than most of America as far as jobs go, we need to pursue every job we can.”
