(Laredo, TX )  Arby’s Restaurant will make “Chicken Little” the big attraction.  Olive Garden will feature “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.”  And La Posada Hotel will display and serve “Green Eggs & Ham.”  These are just a few of the many restaurants that are participating in the first ever Eat and Read Festival on Friday, June 3, 2011, from 7:00-9:30 p.m., at the Laredo Civic Center, 2400 San Bernardo Avenue, where these and many other food-friendly titled books will be a feast for the stomach, as well as the eyes.

“Literacy is not simply reading, it is the nourishment of the mind,” said Nellie Trust, president of the Friends of the Library committee that is hosting this and various other fundraisers to raise funds to buy books and other resources for two new public libraries currently under construction.   “In our community, where breaking bread with family and friends is ingrained in our culture, this event is the perfect way to bring together food for mind and body, while also helping a very worthy cause.”

With dishes of every variety on the menu and music, entertainment and door prizes on tap, the event will be something the whole family can enjoy.

Ticket prices start at $10 for children 4-11 years old; children 3 and under are free.  Adult individual tickets are $20; tables of 10 can be purchased for $200.

“From chicken soup to chicken nuggets, or from spaghetti and meatballs to surf and turf, this event will be the first city-wide public appreciation of books, all while promoting the value of reading,” said City of Laredo Mayor Raul G. Salinas, who is looking forward to seeing the book “Too Many Tamales” brought to life by Variety Meats.

For more information, or to reserve a table for 10 or for individual tickets, visit the Laredo Public Library, located at 1120 East Calton Road or call the administration at 795-2400.  You may also contact Trust at 722-7477 or ntrust@stx.rr.com.

The two new libraries are expected to be completed by September, 2011.
