The Laredo Fire Department has always been proactive when it comes to improving efficiency, becoming more cost effective and offering overall the best service possible to the citizens. With this in mind, the fire department recently acquired a new fleet service vehicle that would enable emergency vehicles to remain within their respective districts while undergoing maintenance. “You could say it is a shop on wheels “ said Deputy Chief of Fire Suppression, Alfredo Equigua. This vehicle is equipped with Caution lights, a Tommy Lift, a compressor for pneumatic tools, an inverter to power electrical tools and lights. Not only does it allow the emergency units to remain in their district to maintain the 5 minute response time but fuel conservation is always a plus. All units are called in twice a year to the shop for a complete maintenance. With this new vehicle most of the maintenance will be taken care of at their station at a scheduled time. Visits to the fire mechanic’s shop would be limited due to major or special repairs. This maintenance program was implemented in 2009 and has increased maintenance efficiency. The life expectancy of our emergency vehicles has increased allowing us to have a better reserve fleet when new fire trucks are purchased. The Laredo Fire Department continues to search for better ways to conserve fuel, reduce cost and offer the best service possible to the citizens of this city.
