LISD Campus Crime Stoppers brings home the gold

LISD Campus Crime Stoppers continues bringing home the gold. A press conference was held Friday morning to announce the nine awards won during the Crime Stopper International conference which was held in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The group competed with other crimes stopper organizations representing 22 countries.
LISD Campus Crime Stoppers competed with schools and communities under 75,000 population category during the International Conference. At the conference the program received the following awards: The awards were for Best Radio Public Service Announcement produced and aired by Magnet Connection 97.5; Best General Newsprint Story written by Bobby Treviño and published in the Laredo Morning Times, describing the LISD Campus Crime Stoppers tip which helped solve the arson case of a Union Pacific locomotive and two nearby houses; Best Television Public Service Announcement produced and edited by the VMT School of Communications and Fine Arts Radio and Television Communications class of Ms. Sonia Sanchez-Lopez and aired by KGNS TV; and the Productivity Award for its 2009 statistics which were the result of the investigation of Crime Stoppers tips by the Laredo ISD Police Department, the Webb County Sheriff’s Office Crime Stoppers Unit, and the Laredo Police Department. Albert Torres, a Martin High School graduate, made history as he won the Student of the Year award for his six years of hard work and dedication to Laredo ISD Campus Crime Stoppers, having served as president from the sixth grade through the twelfth grade.
The Campus Crime Stoppers, who partners with the LISD Police Department, is a nationally recognized organization which provides students with the opportunity to give anonymous information by phone, text or online about any illegal activities at their campus or by students off campus. This organization gives rewards for tips that prevent a crime or tips which lead to the arrest or detention of any student committing an offense. Last year, Campus Crime Stoppers received 827 tips and paid close to $18,000 in rewards.
