Second Federal Judge for Laredo Nominated by the President
Washington, DC – Yesterday, Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) released the following statement in response to President Obama’s nomination of Marina Garcia Marmolejo to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas. If confirmed by the Senate, Marmolejo will serve as one of two federal judges for the U.S. District Court in Laredo, Texas. This is the second nomination made by the President to fulfill the pending federal judgeships throughout the State of Texas.

“Today, I congratulate Marina Garcia Marmolejo on this honor and privilege to be nominated by the President as a U.S. District Court Judge in Laredo, Texas. As a native Laredoan, she spent the majority of her professional career serving our community and defending the rule of law. As a 1989 graduate of United High School, she was the Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of Texas from 1999 to 2007. Previously, she served the federal court in Laredo as an Assistant Federal Public Defender and Assistant Federal Prosecutor. Therefore, it will be to the benefit of Laredo to have one of our own return back home.

“Since last year, the Texas Democratic Congressional Delegation has recommended to the White House Mrs. Marmolejo and other qualified candidates to serve the Texas federal court. Two weeks ago, President Obama made his first nomination of Judge Saldana to the U.S. District Court in Laredo. I am encouraged by this second nomination and I am especially pleased that the President has made his first two nominations for the U.S. District Court in Laredo. Moving forward, I will continue to work with my colleagues to ensure the State of Texas has its remaining judgeships nominated and confirmed as swiftly as possible. I trust that our Senate colleagues, Senator John Cornyn and Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, will expeditiously review and confirm this second nomination, and I look forward to working together to fulfill our remaining judgeships throughout the state.”
