Barcelona Street Shooting

On June 9, 2010 at approximately 6:39pm, Laredo Police Department Emergency dispatch received a report of a shooting by Frost and Barcelona. Upon arrival officer’s observed an elderly female identified as Carmen Vela, age 62, on the ground in front of 3002 Barcelona Ave. suffering from a gunshot wound to the right arm and right hip. After summoning for medical personnel the officer approached the residence and observed the suspect, identified as Dora Elizabeth Vela, age 39, walking in the driveway towards the street. Vela, upon observing the police officer, immediately placed her hands in the air and surrendered to the officer. The officer walked the Ms. Vela to the police vehicle and advised Ms. Vela of her rights. While the officer was questioning Ms. Vela regarding the incident, a second victim Emilio Gonzales, age 59, approached the officer and advised him that he had been shot by Vela as well. The officer observed a gunshot wound to the right shoulder of Mr. Gonzales.
Victim Carmen Vela and Victim Emilio Gonzales were transported to Laredo Medical Center for treatment of their wounds. The wounds were not life-threatening and both victims are expected to recover
When Vela shot her mother she proceeded to shoot in the back yard of her neighbor’s house where Emilio Gonzalez was with his wife, 2 grandchildren and a niece. Dora Vela was charged with Aggravated Assault F/1 (FAMILY VIOLENCE) and Aggravated Assault F/2 (5 counts). She was remanded with no bond pending magistration.
