LAREDO – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Laredo District hosted a Click It or Ticket (CIOT) press conference today to officially kick-off the ninth annual CIOT campaign statewide and in Laredo.
At the event, the Laredo Police Department was awarded $20,000 by TxDOT for the Click It or Ticket campaign which is part of a nationwide crackdown aimed at enforcing safety belt and child safety seat laws for adults and children during the Memorial Day (May 31) holiday period.
Locally, May 24 through June 6, law enforcement officers will be ticketing drivers and passengers for not wearing their safety belts or not properly buckling up their children.
This year’s campaign emphasizes two new laws implemented in 2009: 1) adults in the back seat can now be ticketed for not wearing their safety belt, and 2) children younger than 8 years old have to ride in a child safety seat or booster seat unless they are taller than 4 feet 9 inches.
Present at today’s event along with city police traffic officers and members of the media were:
● The Honorable Raul G. Salinas, Mayor, City of Laredo
● The Honorable Alfonso “Boyer” Ornelas, Municipal Court Judge, City of Laredo
● Carlos Maldonado, Chief of Police, Laredo Police Department
● Frank Marrero, Regional Program Manager, Nat’l Highway Traffic Safety Adm.
● Israel Campos, Law Enforcement Coordinator, Texas Municipal Police Assn. (TMPA)
● Investigator Joe E. Baez, CIOT Project Director, Laredo Police Department
