Earlier this year, Catholic schools across the country celebrated Catholic Schools Week.  One of the activities was participation in the national Catholic organization, Holy Cross Family Ministries’ annual art contest, open to all Catholic schools students from kindergarten to 12th grade.  This year’s 1st Place winner for kindergarten students was once again a student from St. Peter’s Memorial School:  6-year old John Bondoc, III.

“We are very proud of John; especially proud that his image portrayed the contest them so beautifully,” said Dr. Linda Mitchell, principal for St. Peter’s.  “It is a testament to what his teacher has taught him, and how we encourage the students to fully express their faith through their work,” she concluded.

This year’s art theme asked contestants to draw a picture that demonstrated the theme, “The Family That Prays Together, Stays Together.”  Bondocs’s artwork depicted a very spiritual image:  a family kneeling, praying in a church, while a multi-colored rosary dominates the right quadrant of the photo.  A beautiful landscape, with a bright yellow sun, vibrant blue clouds, small birds, a leafy tree, vivid roses, and grass, surround the image, while the simple reminder, ‘Jesus said love everybody’ runs across the page.  The work is in pencil, crayon and marker on an 8 1/2” x 11” ivory construction paper.

“It is very important to go to church, learn your prayers and say the rosary,” said the budding young artist.  “We learn how to do that from our parents, but especially, here at St. Peter’s,” Bondoc concluded.

Bondoc received a $100 cash prize; St. Peter’s Memorial School also received a $200 gift prize for sponsoring the contest in the school and boasting the winner.

Bondoc is the son of John and Sandy Bondoc, the latter who also works as a volunteer at St. Peter’s, helping to coach the kindergarten championship basketball team.  Bondoc is also the grandson of Mrs. Doloros Bondoc, the K-3 teacher at St. Peter’s, where his brother Justin is a student, as well.

St. Peter’s Memorial School is one of the oldest Catholic schools in Laredo.  First established in 1925, the school was run under the auspices of the Ursuline Sisters until 1968, and then the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco.  Now part of the Catholic Diocese of Laredo, the school offers classes from level K3 through 8th grade and typically serves approximately 150 students each year.
