Small classes, high academic standards and spiritual, family environment are just some of the school’s highlights

April 20, 2010—As final test schedules are prepared and students are starting to talk about summer vacation, St. Peter’s Memorial School is already busy preparing for the 2010-2011 academic year.  Pre-registration is ongoing; deadline to turn in all documents is May 21, 2010; especially for parents who wish to be considered for scholarship assistance.

“St. Peter’s Memorial School, while having one of the lowest academic tuition rates among Laredo private schools, boasts high academic standards and test scores,” said Dr. Linda Marie Garcia Mitchell, principal of the school.  “Our small class sizes enable the teachers to really work one-on-one with students, pushing them to the next level.  This is evident in the countless awards bestowed on so many of the students in the various academic contests they participate in, and most telling, the scores of the students on their standardized test,” she added.

Private schools are not subject to the same TAKS test students at public schools are required to test; however, they are given an aptitude test to measure their academic potential.

The school has a library, computer lab and science lab.  A basketball courtyard and covered playground help provide endless fun and exercise opportunities.

Other highlights of the school include the strong Roman Catholic identity, with weekly Mass at St. Peter the Apostle Church, activities and events that highlight Christian, spiritual growth.

“As a parent, it is wonderful to see the reinforcement of prayers and blessings in the everyday activities all children, from K-3 to 8th grade, participate in,” said Cynthia De Los Reyes, whose child, Matthew, attends K-3 this year. “It really strengthens the foundation we set for our children.”

St. Peter’s offers numerous clubs and activities, from sports to arts, for all students.  Additionally, for a nominal fee – some students may even qualify for free or reduced price – a healthy lunch is offered, thanks to a partnership with Laredo I.S.D.  Finally, the school also provides after-school care, at an additional fee, for those parents whose work lets out later.

St. Peter’s has an active school calendar, with activities throughout the year; however, the school is most famous for its Annual Fall Jamaica & Bingo and their traditional Christmas Posadas presentation.

St. Peter’s Memorial School is one of the oldest Catholic schools in Laredo.  First established in 1925, the school was run under the auspices of the Ursuline Sisters until 1968, and then the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco.  Now part of the Catholic Diocese of Laredo, the school offers classes from level K3 through 8th grade and typically serves approximately 150 students each year.
