Laredo, Texas (Webb County) – The installation of new cell doors at the Webb County Jail began late February 2010, in the holding area, medical area and kitchen area. The installation of these new doors brings added security for inmates. The cell door windows have been enlarged from a 4 ½”x 9” to 24”x 36”. The added visual area, also allows the officer to observe a potential threat or threats prior to opening the cell door, as well as increase response time for medical emergencies and/or illegal activities.
With the old cell doors, an officer would ask inmates to step back and then that officer would open the door with limited visual. With these new cell doors and windows, the officer will have an account of where every inmate in that cell is standing prior to opening the door. The installation of these doors is more than ¾ of the way complete. Completion set for the end of the week of March 19th, 2010. Additional doors have been installed in other security threat locations to minimize security threats from the jail.
“In the last several months, I formed a jail feasibility committee with the goal of building a new Jail. Meanwhile, the existing jail is in dire need of upgrades. The addition of these doors will add to the safety and security of our officers and inmates. Sheriff Martin Cuellar stated.
