Ryan Elementary school celebrated the Chinese New Year 2010 Year of the Tiger.  Today second grade students celebrated the New Year with a Dragon Parade followed by a Chinese meal in their classroom where they sampled different types of Chinese food.

“The students have been provided a great opportunity to learn about other cultures and traditions,” said Sandra Munoz, Ryan Elementary Principal. “Our second grade students have been learning about the Chinese cultural traditions that take place during their Chinese New Year Celebration.”

Throughout the week, teachers read different books to the students about the Chinese New Year.  Students then watched videos and held discussions on Chinese cultures and traditions.  The students learned about traditions carried out throughout the Chinese New Year celebration, the Animal Zodiac, and their name in Chinese Calligraphy, symbols and meanings of dragons, oranges, the color red, and traditional Chinese food. Students were then asked to create their own book depicting interesting things they have learned about the traditions carried out throughout the Chinese New Year.

The students also received a dragon which they decorated at home for homework.  As part of the Chinese New Year Parade around the school the students showed off the beautiful dragons they created and then they headed back to the classroom where they were treated to a wonderful Chinese lunch.
