Oscar Perez is taking the helm of the city’s oldest high school. Perez was named principal of Martin High School by Laredo ISD Superintendent Dr. Marcus Nelson during Thursday night’s meeting of the Laredo Independent School District.
Perez, who is currently principal of Cigarroa High School, is expected to begin his new position immediately.
Dr. Nelson also named John Eric Salinas as Cigarroa’s interim principal. Salinas is currently Career Academies Dean at CHS.
Gloria Martinez was appointed principal of Dovalina Elementary School. Martinez is currently a vice-principal at CHS.
“If we want LISD students to become tomorrow’s successful, contributing citizens, then it is vital that we provide them with the best instructional leadership at their schools today,” Dr. Nelson said. “Perez, Salinas, and Martinez bring years of experience in curriculum and discipline management. I have complete faith in the abilities of Perez, Martinez, and Salinas. I expect that Martin High School and Dovalina Elementary School will once again be recognized for their academic excellence. I also believe that Salinas’ dynamic qualities will result in unprecedented scholastic distinctions like we have never seen before in south Laredo.”
Perez, who has been an educator since 1980, was a principal at LBJ High School, Los Obispos Middle School, and Perez Elementary School. He is presently a doctoral student in educational administration at TAMIU.
Martinez has been a vice principal at CHS since 2004. She also directed LISD’s social studies program. She earned her bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.
Prior to joining the CHS staff in 2009, Salinas was assistant principal at LBJ High School. He is also an online adjunct instructor and mentor at Laredo Community College. Salinas is currently working on a doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction at Texas A & M University in College Station.
Dr. Nelson publicly thanked Dr. Severita Sanchez for serving as interim principal at Martin High School. He also recognized Martha Rubio for serving as interim principal at Dovalina Elementary School.
