Changes to Solid Waste Collection Schedule

Changes affect lawn-clippings, branches and recycling only

Laredo, TX—Sept. 23, 2009— In an effort to help keep operating costs low, the City of Laredo Solid Waste Services Division will be making a change to the lawn-clippings and recycling pick-up schedules. Effective Monday, October 5, both lawn-clippings and recycling will each be collected only twice a month, on an alternating weekly schedule.

“After looking at various factors, including rising fuel and maintenance costs, City Council decided they would rather modify some of the services to avoid raising the service fees,” said Willie Bote.  “This new plan, aside from saving money, should actually help residents take better care of the environment, by encouraging them to recycle their trash and their clippings.  It’s a win-win for everyone,” he added.

Under the new plan, every week, either recycling or lawn clippings will be picked up on the designated day, depending on the residents’ zip code.  During the first week of the new schedule, crews will be collecting lawn-clipping bags and small pile of branches.  The following week, the recycle blue bags will be collected, on the same designated day.

Trash pick-up, however, remains the same with twice-weekly curbside pick-up.

The day assigned for the collection of the recycling material or lawn-clipping bags depends on the ZIP code in which one lives.  Generally, this will be the designated day for each zip code:

78040 – Wednesday; 78041 – Thursday; 78043 – Tuesday; 78045 – Friday; 78046 – Monday.  There will be exceptions, such as for holidays.  In those cases, the pick-up may be either the day before or after the holiday. To help customers keep track of their designated collection day, or any variations to that schedule, a handy brochure will be mailed to residents with the exact scheduled collection dates for lawn-clippings and recycling.

“It’s a great brochure, with the collection calendar dates listed for each zip code, as well as lots of helpful hints on gathering grass clippings and what can be recycled.  I encourage everyone to post it somewhere so that they won’t forget, such as on their refrigerator,” Bote concluded.

Branches must be bundled, tied with string or twine and should be 3″ or less in diameter and 5′ or less in length. Do not use blue bags for grass and lawn clippings, but rather, other appropriate plastic bags.  Use your blue bags for all clean paper, plastic, aluminum, cardboard and tin recyclable material only.  Both blue bags and lawn clippings must be placed out on the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the designated collection day to ensure that it is picked up.
