The Laredo Police Department arrested Edgar Gabriel Cerda, 40 yrs. old, after Detectives from the Special Investigations Unit found enough evidence to merit a warrant of arrest from an incident that occurred on May 03, 2009 @ a local motel on the 7000 block of San Bernardo. An 11 yr. old child was swimming at the motel pool while he was visiting family members from out of town who were staying at the motel. The child went to the motel lobby to use the public restroom. The child was followed by an unknown male subject that allegedly began to forcibly grab the child and fondled the child in an indecent, sexual manner. The child resisted the physical advances of the man and was able to run away from the man in the restroom. The child ran to his family out by the pool area and told his parents what happened. The man left the scene before police arrival at the scene. A search of the immediate area was conducted by police but rendered no suspect.

The Special Investigations Unit Detectives were assigned the case. Video surveillance footage of the lobby of the motel captured a man entering the restroom after the child. The combination of the surveillance footage and other contributing pieces of documented evidence lead to a license plate number identifying the owner of that vehicle as Edgar Cerda who matched the description given by the victim and also that of the footage in the lobby. LPD officers assigned to the U.S. Marshal’s fugitive task force arrested Cerda with the Indecency with a Child w/Sexual Contact Felony 2 warrant. If convicted Cerda faces 2 to 20 years in prison and a fine not exceed $10,000. Cerda was remanded to Webb County Jail under a $100,000 bond set by Justice of the Peace Oscar Martinez.
