TAMIU SWINE FLU INFORMATION

Dear University Community,There have also been three cases of possible swine flu found in Nuevo Laredo, with no deaths and one hospitalization. Final determination of the cases will take up to seven days.  All Nuevo Laredo schools have been closed.

While there have been no cases in Laredo, Texas A&M International University is monitoring the situation along with the City of Laredo Health Department, schools, physicians and hospitals  and advises all TAMIU students to be aware of their health status.

There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy.

The situation with news about swine influenza continues to change hourly.  This afternoon, the World Health Organization (WHO)  raised its pandemic alert level to Level Four in response to the outbreak of swine flu that originated in Mexico, according to U.S. Homeland Security.

In this region, cases have been reported in the San Antonio area.

Things you can do now…

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
