Laredo, TX— The City of Laredo’s Health Department (CLHD), in collaboration with the Secretaria de Salud de Nuevo Laredo, Juridiccion Sanitaria No. V, United States Mexico Border Healthy Commission and the Texas Department of State Health Services will commemorate Border Binational Health Week (BBHW) October 1, 2012 through Saturday October 6, 2012.

As in the past, this week allows us to highlight routine and critical binational efforts between Los Dos Laredos to raise awareness on disease control collaboration, disease surveillance, coordination, communication, joint health promotion and prevention and to address critical binational public health issues. This year, we again highlight the prevention of obesity and diabetes. For us, diabetes and heart disease continue to place an undue health burden, especially to persons with diabetes, but the emerging concern is children and women during pregnancy. Both are critically important to address as children and young persons under 25 years of age will face very serious health effects if we do not prevent and reduce risks now.

BBHW 2012 kicks off with an inaugural ceremony on Monday, October 1, 2012 at the City of Laredo Health Department at 11:00 a.m.  A health fair that will be open to the public will take place that same day at CLHD under the canopy that will include informational booths on preventing obesity and diabetes, free glucose screenings, height and weight (BMI) screenings, and blood pressure screenings from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
