DEL RIO, TEXASU.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Del Rio Port of Entry recently seized $78,000 in marijuana from a San Antonio man during a routine inspection. The marijuana seizure occurred on Aug. 12, 2010 at the international bridge. A CBP officer referred a 1998 Chevy 1500 pickup driven by a 49-year-old male Mexican citizen from San Antonio for a secondary examination. In secondary, CBP officers noticed discrepancies in the spare tire area. A CBP Canine alerted to the odor of narcotics emanating from the vehicle. A non-intrusive imaging system scan indicated anomalies in the spare tire and quarter panel area. CBP officers conducted an intensive examination of the vehicle and seized 70 packages containing a total of 78 pounds of marijuana hidden within the vehicle. The marijuana has an estimated street value of $78,000.

CBP officers turned the driver over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI) special agents for further investigation and seized the vehicle and the contraband.

“ This is a significant seizure of marijuana and it illustrates the resolve of our frontline CBP officers to keep our borders secure,” said Michael Perez, CBP Port Director, Del Rio .
