BRONCOS PELTED BY THUNDER

August 2, 2009-Laredo, TX-The Laredo Broncos fell behind early and could not come back, as they lost to the Coastal Bend Thunder by a score of 7-4 at Veterans Field, on Sunday.

The Thunder started the scoring in the first inning.  Michael Lewis led off with a triple and then scored when the relay throw by Jaime Morales was thrown into the Broncos’ dugout.  That gave Coastal Bend the 1-0 lead.

The Broncos tied the game at 1 in the bottom half of the first.  With two outs, Mario Mendez doubled and then scored on a single by Argelis Nunez.

The Thunder took the lead back in the second.  With two outs Alfred Joseph walked and then went to second on a wild pitch.  Bryan Vickers then knocked him in with a single, to make the score 2-1.

Coastal Bend added on to their lead in the third.  With runners on the corners and no one out, Alex Fernandez singled in Leivi Ventura.  Two batters later Alfred Joseph singled in Manny Mejia.  Then with two outs and Joseph at second and Carlos Rodriguez at third, Kevin Butler drove them in with a single.  That made the score 6-1.

Broncos’ starter Brandon Melvin was taken out after two and a third innings.  He gave up six runs, five earned, on six hits.  He walked three batters and struck out none.  Carlos Alvarez came into the game and finished the inning.

The Thunder extended their lead in the fourth, on a rbi single by Manny Mejia.  The score was now 7-1.

Coastal Bend scored again in the fifth.  A solo home run by Bryan Vickers, his fifth of the season, did the damage.  Later in the inning, Leivi Ventura hit a two run single that scored Kevin Butler and Michael Lewis.  That chased Alvarez from the game as Robert Moron came in to pitch.  The Thunder now had a 10-1 lead.

The Broncos got back on the scoreboard in their half of the fifth.  With two outs, Jaime Morales singled and then went to third on a single by Luis Ugueto.  David Cardona then knocked in Morales with a single, to make the score 10-2.

Laredo scored again in the sixth.  Luany Sanchez and Andres “El Monkey” Santos hit back to back solo home runs.  For Sanchez it was his fourth, and for Santos his fifth.  The Broncos now trailed by a score of 10-4.

The Thunder got back those two runs in the seventh.  Two sacrifice flies were hit in the inning, one by Manny Mejia and another by Alex Fernandez.  The score was now 12-4.

The Broncos struck again in their half of the seventh.  With one out David Cardona and Mario Mendez hit back to back singles.  Argelis Nunez then followed with a single and when the ball got by the left fielder, Cardona was able to score and Mendez moved to third.  Mendez then scored on a ground out by Luany Sanchez, making the score 12-6.

The Broncos added a run in the eighth inning.  Luis Ugueto singled in Alejandro Martinez, to make it a five run ballgame.

Laredo went quietly in the ninth as they dropped the third game of the series by a score of 12-7.

The Broncos scored 7 runs on 15 hits and had 2 errors while the Thunder scored 12 runs on 16 hits and had 1 error.

The Broncos are now 18-33 on the season while the Thunder are 24-27.  The Broncos will next be in action Monday August 3rd, as they play the finale of a four game series against the Coastal Bend Thunder at 7:30.  You can listen to that game and all 80 Broncos games this year on our website www.laredobroncos.com through our partners at www.sportsujuice.com.
