TAMIU Athletics to Begin Search for New Leadership

Texas A&M International University’s Athletics Department will begin the Fall semester with new leadership for its NCAA Division II Athletics program.

On Friday, the University announced the departure of Athletics Director Dr. Debbie L. Snell, Coach Stephone Leary, Coach Daryl Vincent, associate director of compliance Christine Rebori and athletics academic coordinator Rebecca Garza.

University President Ray Keck said the University is moving forward with plans to establish new leadership in the Department.

“While this is a challenging time for the University, we are moving forward. As these are personnel matters, we’re unable to comment any further,” Dr. Keck said.

“We are committed to continuing to build on our NCAA programs and to securing the finest leadership and coaching staff to do this. We firmly extend that commitment to our student-athletes to insure that their experience is the finest we can deliver. We also extend that commitment to our community of supporters and partners in order to provide them with continuing opportunities to be a part of a strong regional University athletics program,” he concluded.

Interim Athletics Director will be Men’s Soccer Coach and Director of Soccer Facilities, Claudio Arias.

Dr. Keck said search committees will be formed to begin an aggressive search for qualified new staff.

I’ve been an avid supporter of TAMIU basketball for awhile and hate to see what is going on right now. I’ve heard about the hiring committee TAMIU put together for the head coach hiring process. The person in charge of student residence is on that committee. Does he know anything about NCAA sports? Does he understand the importance of a head coach that can network? I heard someone from the department of financial aid is on the committee as well. I’m sorry, but Laredo needs to step away from this small-time approach to college sports. You need people that have played NCAA ball. The interim AD doesn’t even know what that’s about. How does TAMIU expect him to be a proper interim AD? Soccer season starts soon. There’s no way this man can juggle being an AD and a soccer head coach. I think TAMIU needs to re-think this hiring committee and include some of the players. Think about who got these players to sign. If TAMIU hires a coach that they don’t want to play for, they can leave and go play for a junior college. It takes a relationship with a player to get him to commit to play at a school. I heard that the ex-assistant coach, Coach Austin, got two more players to sign recently. Why is he not being looked at as an option for head coach? Open your eyes, TAMIU. You’ve got a head coach possibility in Trey Austin! He knows all the important people in the basketball world, and more importantly, they know him. It would be great to see TAMIU’s athletic department filled with more people like him, who know about NCAA athletics, and how it should be run. Let’s not think small-town for TAMIU anymore. Let’s try to build a better program!

In the next week or 2 there will be information released
that will be a bit different ,to say the least, then the orignal
charges. The university publicly humiliated these people with
2nd hand info. Be patient everyone and wait for the truth to
    come out.

    CORRECTION
Dr. Snell came to TAMIU from Cambell University where she served as AD not Palm Beach Atlantic University. Coach Leary left Palm Beach Atlantic University after two winless seasons. He took 5 players with him which is considered unethical by the NCAA. Several wanted to return to PBAU but were not elegible to do so due to NCAA rules. Had he not resigned from PBAU he probably would have been terminated.

Why was yesterday’s article deleted from your website? Interesting how that included the “personal matters.”
