(Laredo, Tx)-The United High School Model United Nations Club attended the national conference in New York and brought back several awards. Of over 1,400 students who attended, Esteban Elizondo, Darren Garcia, Enrique Mejia, and Daniel Mendez were recognized as delegates and won the “Best Delegation Award.”
Only 12 students at the conference received this recognition and UHS had 4 of these 12 students. The Model United Nations Club (also known as Model UN or MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate students about current events.
Topics they may study include: international relations, diplomacy, and the agenda of the United Nations. Students role-play as diplomats representing a nation in a simulated session of a committee of the United Nations, such as the Security Council or the General Assembly. The students must research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems.
The conference provided students with an unparalleled opportunity to experience the theory and practice of international relations firsthand. Their proud teacher and sponsor is Kevin Crowell.
