HB 5 Garcia talking to parents(Laredo, Tx)-United ISD Administrator Laura Garcia talks to parents of 8th grade students at a recent House Bill 5 parent meeting held at United Middle School.  Garcia presented the new requirements for graduation planning which go into effect next school year with the incoming freshmen class.  The new plan allows for greater flexibility in choosing high school courses while maintaining academic excellence.  The Bill also reduces the number of end-of-course assessments required for graduation from 15 EOC to five.  More information on House Bill 5 can be found on the District’s website at www.uisd.net.

HB 5 Cecilia BrionesUnited Middle School Counselor Cecilia Briones also offered a House Bill 5 parent session in Spanish.  Briones explained that the Foundation High School Plan allows students to graduate with the most basic requirements possible.  However, a student may stack the FHSP with the desirable workforce endorsement which naturally prepares students for post-secondary and workforce options.  The workforce endorsements that United ISD will be offering are:  STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), Business/Industry, Public Services, Arts/Humanities, and Multidisciplinary Studies.  For more information on House Bill 5, go to www.uisd.net or visit with your child’s campus administration.
