Laredo , Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Laredo Port of Entry seized a significant load of cocaine valued at $10 million during an inspection of a commercial bus this weekend.
The cocaine seizure occurred on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at Lincoln-Juarez Bridge . A CBP officer referred a 2001 Irizair bus driven by a 36-year-old Mexican citizen from Nezahualcoyotl , Mexico for a secondary inspection. During the inspection, a non-intrusive imaging system indicated anomalies in the center console and floor area. CBP Canine “Jacky” alerted to the odor of narcotics emanating from the bus. During an intensive inspection, CBP officers probed the floor area and roof area and removed 123 bundles of cocaine. CBP officers seized a total of nearly 315 pounds of cocaine, which carries a street value of $10 million. No immediate arrest was made, but an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agents of the seizure remains ongoing.
“This is one of the larger seizures of cocaine our officers have made in the passenger processing environment so far this fiscal year. It underscores the dedication and diligence of our officers to use their training and high tech tools to zero-in on these significant drug loads,” said Gene Garza, CBP Port Director, Laredo .
