SEVERE WEATHER PRECAUTIONS


Laredo, TX – – The City of Laredo Health Department (CLHD) wants to inform the public that The National Weather Service has predicted an arctic cold front that will blast through South Texas on Tuesday and usher in the coldest air of the season. There is a potential for a mix of light rain and sleet to develop as early as Thursday afternoon continuing through Friday morning Therefore all city departments and emergency services are taking necessary precautions and actions to protect the public, reduce accidents and prevent cold exposure. The CLHD urges the public to be alert and aware of these dangerous conditions.

We also want to provide the public with the following—-Cold Weather Precautions: Monitor your food intake and physical output and maintain a regular diet to help your body better handle the severe weather conditions. Hydrate – Drinks with caffeine, sugar and alcohol take longer for your body to absorb and do not hydrate as well. Water is usually the best choice. If you go outside, wear appropriate clothing that will adequately insulate you from the cold and provide protection from the wind. Please make sure to wear hat and mittens when you go outside. Dress in layers to better facilitate regulating your body temperature. Older adults, those in fragile health and smaller children can be more readily affected by the cold than the average adult, remember to take all medications as prescribed by your doctor but ask if there are any special precautions for cold weather.. Check on loved ones and neighbors, especially those in fragile health, preferably by telephone. Pets can be greatly affected by the cold and should not be exposed longer than they have to be, provide added protection against wind and cold air. Check heating units. Poorly operating or damaged heating units can release carbon monoxide gas. Test carbon monoxide detectors for proper operation and battery life. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that kills more than 500 Americans every year. Never us generators, grills, camp stoves, or other gasoline or charcoal-burning devices inside your home, basement, garage or near a window. Also, make sure you have installed a carbon monoxide detector in your home t alert you and your family to this “silent killer.” Drive slowly if there is ice or rain and follow all precautions and wear appropriate car safety belts/restraints
