Laredo, Texas – The City of Laredo and Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño presented the Key to the City to KGNS Chief Meteorologist Richard “Heatwave” Berler on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, in recognition of his decades-long dedication to delivering accurate, reliable weather information to the Laredo community.
With a career spanning more than four decades, Mr. Berler has become a trusted and familiar face in households across Laredo, providing critical weather updates that help residents stay informed and prepared.
Originally from Westport, Connecticut, Mr. Berler developed a passion for meteorology at a young age. His early fascination with extreme temperatures and climate data led him to South Texas, where he first visited Laredo in 1977. Inspired by the region’s unique climate, he returned to pursue a career opportunity and officially joined KGNS in 1980, where he has remained a cornerstone of local broadcast journalism ever since.
Beyond forecasting, Mr. Berler has played a vital role in weather observation and data collection. For many years, he maintained National Weather Service instrumentation in Laredo, contributing valuable climatological data and long-term weather records that support both local awareness and national research.
Throughout his distinguished career, Mr. Berler has received numerous honors, including designation as a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist by the American Meteorological Society, the prestigious John Campanius Holm Award from the National Weather Service and National Centers for Environmental Information, and the Jefferson Award in recognition of his exceptional public service.
In addition to his work on-air, Mr. Berler has remained actively engaged with the community through school visits, civic presentations, and professional contributions at meteorological conferences, helping to inspire and educate future generations.
Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño highlighted Mr. Berler’s lasting impact on the community, stating:
