City of Laredo Council Elects New Mayor Pro Tempore for 2026

LAREDO, TX – During the final regularly scheduled City Council meeting of the year, the Laredo City Council elected District 1 Council Member Gilbert Gonzalez as the new Mayor Pro Tempore for 2026, following a recommendation from Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño. Council Member Gonzalez succeeds the outgoing Mayor Pro Tempore District 7 Council Member Vanessa Perez, continuing the tradition of strong leadership and representation on behalf of the City of Laredo.

The role of Mayor Pro Tempore is essential to maintaining continuity in city leadership. As outlined by City ordinance, the Mayor Pro Tempore serves as the Mayor in the Mayor’s absence and may preside over City Council meetings and official functions when needed.

Council Member Gonzalez expressed his gratitude and commitment to the community, stating:

“Serving as Mayor Pro Tempore is a privilege, and I’m grateful for the trust placed in me. My commitment is to the people of Laredo to listen, to collaborate, and to help create opportunities that make every neighborhood thrive. Our progress is a shared effort, and I’m excited for what we will accomplish together.”

Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño commended the selection, noting that Council Member Gonzalez has demonstrated a strong dedication to public service and to the well-being of Laredo residents.
