MENDEZ SENTENCED TO LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE

(Laredo, Tx)-The District Attorney’s Office reports that a jury found Rene Mendez guilty of Capital Murder of Multiple Persons. Capital Murder carries an Automatic sentence of LIFE WITHOUT THE POSSIBLILTY OF PAROLE. This case came to light on March 6, 2023, when Laredo Police Department was at a call for service on Arkansas Ave at approximately 11:28 a.m. LPD Officer was waved down by an unknown male across the street at an apartment complex located at 2601 Lomas Del Sur Blvd.

The male appeared to be in distress as he was screaming “come here”, “hurry”, “run”, “My sister was killed”. Upon entering the apartment, officers found two lifeless bodies, who were identified as Sylvia Ramos and her daughter Brianna Ramos.

The unknown male was later identified as the brother of Ms. Sylvia Ramos. Mr. Ramos stated to officers that his sister was living with her boyfriend Rene Mendez and her daughter Brianna Ramos at the apartment complex at that time. LPD issued a BOLO for Mendez on March 6, 2023. Later that day, LPD responded to an overdose call at Motel 6 on 5310 San Bernardo Ave.

The subject was identified as Rene Mendez. The investigation by LPD revealed that Rene Mendez had asphyxiated Brianna Ramos and later stabbed Sylvia Ramos with a sharp object 55 times. The trial, which took place before the Honorable 341st District Court Judge Rebecca Palomo, was presented to a jury over the course of five days and rendered a Guilty verdict on count #1 Capital Murder of Multiple Persons.

After finding Mendez guilty Judge Palomo assessed punishment of LIFE without parole in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Correctional Institutional Division. Court Chief ADA of the 341st Kassandra De Hoyos, ADA Jesus Vigil, ADA Omar Villarreal and Court Chief of the 406th Cristal Calderon prosecuted the case for the State.
