LAREDO, Texas – During the City Council meeting held on Monday, September 15, 2025, Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño and members of the Laredo City Council proudly recognized two exceptional accomplishments in education that continue to elevate Laredo’s reputation for academic excellence.

Aaron Garza, an 8-year-old third grader from San Isidro Elementary School, was honored for his acceptance into the prestigious National Math Stars program. Out of over 6,000 applicants nationwide, Aaron was one of only 80 students selected, placing him in the top 0.2% of I-Ready math performers in the United States. He is the only student from United Independent School District (UISD) and from the City of Laredo to advance to the final stage of this national academic competition.

Also recognized were United South High School Principal Martha Alvarez and the entire school administration for earning an “A” rating from the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and for being ranked No. 1 in the state among comparable high schools, with an impressive overall score of 93. This distinction places United South High School at the forefront of academic excellence in Texas and highlights the unwavering commitment of its leadership, educators, and students.

The City of Laredo extends its heartfelt congratulations to both Aaron Garza and United South High School. We are proud to celebrate their success and remain committed to supporting educational achievement at all levels.
