McAllen Public Utility to Require Backflow Inspections to Protect Water Quality

(McAllen, Texas)-To ensure the continued safety and quality of the city’s drinking water, McAllen Public Utility (MPU) will provide additional notices of backflow prevention requirements for all customers. This initiative aims to safeguard the public water supply from potential contamination caused by backflow—an issue that occurs when water flows in the reverse direction due to changes in pressure, potentially introducing pollutants into the system.

“Protecting our community’s water quality is a top priority,” said MPU General Manager Mark Vega, P.E. “By providing additional notices, we are taking a proactive approach to preventing contamination, ensure compliance with state and federal water safety regulations and maintain exceptional customer service.”

Backflow can introduce hazardous substances such as pesticides, chemicals, and bacteria into the drinking water supply. To prevent this, backflow prevention assemblies must be installed on all residential, including multifamily residential complexes, including those with pools and/or irrigation systems; commercial properties with irrigation systems or fire suppression systems; and industrial facilities handling chemicals or hazardous materials

Regular backflow testing and inspections verify that these devices are working properly and protecting the integrity of McAllen’s water system.
