LAREDO, TX— The City of Laredo and Keep Laredo Beautiful will host a proclamation to commemorate the first Saturday of November as Laredo Arbor Day starting Friday, November 8th, 2024, at City Hall Council Chambers. The first Laredo Arbor Day will be celebrated on November 9th, 2024, at Independence Hills Park, where approximately 130 trees will be planted.
Adding more trees to local parks will benefit Laredo in numerous ways. Trees play a vital role in the water cycle, and planting more trees can help maintain a healthy water supply and prevent stormwater pollution. Tree roots filter water and release it as vapor. Trees and forests can also increase rainfall intensity and reduce the length of dry seasons by creating microclimates.
Trees draw water out of the soil and release it into the atmosphere, which impacts the balance of water and heat at the Earth’s surface and controls the weather. On average, more than 40% of precipitation over land comes from water evaporation and transpiration from vegetation.
This commemorative event aims to encourage the community to take care of the environment by taking at least one day of the year to learn about and plant more trees. Trees are essential to the collective well-being and unify people when they are planted as a community. Through education and outreach, the community will be able to see first-hand how easy it is to plant a tree, with the goal of enhancing Laredo’s urban tree canopy.
