Laredo, TX – Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) announced $6,005,040 in Federal Funding for Gateway Community Health Centers.

“The $6,005,040 in funding will significantly enhance our Gateway Community Health Center locations, which serve more than 32,000 patients annually,” said Dr. Cuellar. “Gateway Health is an outstanding community partner across South Texas and these federal dollars will ensure these locations can continue to provide fundamental services for people in the community. In Congress, I will continue to fight for affordable, quality healthcare. Thank you to Mayor Trevino, Gateway CEO Elmo Lopez, COO Daniel Cabrera III, Board Chairman Lauro A. Garcia, and Director of Communications and Public Affairs David Kash Vasquez for your dedicated service to our communities. ”

“On behalf of Gateway Community Health Center, I want to extend our deepest gratitude to the Department of Health and Human Services, HRSA, and Congressman Henry Cuellar for their unwavering support through the Health Center Program Grant. This funding is vital in helping us continue to provide essential medical, dental, and behavioral health services to our community. We are grateful for their commitment to ensuring we live up to our mission which is to provide healthcare for everyone, and we are honored to do this every day within our clinic walls,” said Elmo Lopez Jr., CEO of Gateway Community Health Center.

This funding is provided by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Health Center Cluster Program. Funding from HRSA is crucial for communities, particularly those that are underserved or face significant health disparities.

This money directly supports local healthcare initiatives, enabling the establishment of essential services, such as primary care clinics, mental health support, and preventive care programs. By ensuring access to these fundamental services, the funding helps bridge the gap in health equity, fostering healthier and more resilient communities.

Every Gateway Community Health Center will benefit from these funds, which include Central Clinic, South Clinic, North Clinic, Laredo College Clinic, Hebbronville Clinic, Zapata Clinic, Gateway Pediatrics, and Gateway’s Mobile Clinic.

These Gateway Clinics serve 32,673 patients annually, totaling 113,788 visits last year.

This investment directly translates to more people receiving medical, dental, behavioral health, and support services such as laboratory services, pharmacy services, radiology, eye exams, disease management, as well as outreach and education.

Since 2021, Gateway clinics has received $35.8 million in federal funding. In fiscal year 2022, Rep. Cuellar secured $2 million in community project funding for West Laredo Gateway Community Health Center. In fiscal year 2023, he secured $1.9 million in community project funding for Mines Road Clinic Gateway Community Health Center.
