LAREDO, TX— City of Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño joined fellow South Texas mayors and state leaders in McAllen, Texas for the South Texas Alliance Cities quarterly meeting. Texas Governor Greg Abbott was in attendance, along with leaders from cities across the region, to discuss pressing economic and local issues affecting South Texas communities.

The meeting, held at the McAllen Convention Center, focused on critical challenges such as the economy, transportation, and—most urgently—the region’s ongoing water crisis. Mayors from San Antonio, Edinburg, Mission, Brownsville, Harlingen, and other South Texas cities united to address water scarcity and discuss potential solutions for managing the area’s dwindling water resources.

A significant part of the discussion centered on ensuring that Mexico upholds its responsibilities under the 1944 water treaty, which impacts water allocations to South Texas. The group also explored new water management strategies to address the increasing pressure on local water supplies.

“We must work together as a region to address this ongoing water crisis. Securing and managing our water resources is essential for the continued growth and sustainability of South Texas communities. The partnership between our cities and the state will be crucial in ensuring that we have the water we need today and for future generations,” said Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño.

This collaborative effort highlights the commitment of South Texas leaders to finding long-term solutions to the water challenges affecting the region.

The next South Texas Alliance Cities meeting is set to take place in Laredo, with the date to be announced soon.
