Many Successful Individuals Were Recognized by Mayor and Council on Monday

LAREDO, TX— The City of Laredo Mayor, Dr. Victor D. Treviño, and members of the Council awarded several individuals during the City Council meeting held on Monday, May 6, 2024, to Laredoans that have accomplished very important objectives, while representing Laredo. The City of Laredo is pleased to continue presenting these recognitions in honor of the achievements of locals who represent this town through their professional careers and/or extracurricular activities. Monday’s recipients were as follows:

Sandra Cavazos Ayala & Cindy Elizabeth Sherwood

The Mayor and City Council recognized Sandra Cavazos Ayala for her role as a bilingual author of children’s books, and illustrator Cindy Elizabeth Sherwood for promoting literacy among the youth, in her hometown of Laredo, and all over the world.

Laredoan Participants of the 2024 Boston Marathon

A recognition was presented to local runners who competed in the 128th Boston Marathon. They are Luis Posada, Eduardo Ibarra, María Rodríguez and Victor Treviño, Jr. Congratulations!

Laredo Fire Department

Mayor Dr. Trevino presented a recognition to the Laredo Fire Department for achieving a Preliminary ISO (Insurance Services Office) Rating, which has been upgraded from 2 to 1. Achieving an ISO rating of 1 is a testament to LFD’s commitment to excellence in fire protection services. It is important to note that this advancement will result in tangible benefits for the local community. With a 2% reduction in insurance premiums for business owners, local businesses will experience cost savings, allowing them to reinvest in their operations, expand their workforce, or contribute to community initiatives.

Margarita Araiza

Also, Margarita Araiza was recognized by the Mayor and members of council for her long-standing dedication and passion for preserving Laredo’s history and heritage as the Executive Director of the Webb County Heritage Foundation for 28 years.

Mary Help of Christians School 4th Grade Basketball Champions

Mayor Dr. Trevino and Members of the City Council presented certificates of recognition to Mary Help of Christians School’s 4th-grade Basketball team for their recent city championship.

Alexander High School Swim Team

The Alexander High School Swim Team was presented with a certificate of recognition for their multiple achievements, including regional champions 3 years in a row for the girl’s team. Also, Chelsea Chavez qualified for state competitions for the third time in a row. Oliva Farias was voted Top Regional Diver, and Ana Lucia Diaz was voted Top District Diver.

Stephie Lozano & Meghan Leyendecker

The City of Laredo recognized Stephie Lozano and Meghan Leyendecker, Alexander High School students, for their remarkable non-profit project, 500 Pounds of Love. Since its inception during their freshman year in 2022, Stephie and Meghan have tirelessly collected and donated over 10,000 pounds of pet food to local organizations. Their dedication and commitment to community service serve as an inspiring example of youth-driven philanthropy. The City applauds their contributions, which have truly made Laredo proud!

United High School Larriettes

United High School 2023-2024 Larriettes were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments of winning three consecutive MA National Titles under the guidance of Mrs. Gina Lara Portillo. With a rich history spanning 52 years, the Larriettes have established an extraordinary legacy of tradition and excellence.

Ximena Salazar

Additionally, Mayor and Council recognized Ximena Salazar, a member of the United High School 2023-2024 Larriettes, for winning the MA National Solo Championship. Ximena’s dedication to choreographing and mixing music for her hip-hop solo, while also attending team practices, exemplifies her unwavering commitment to excellence.

Honore Ligarde Elementary Lady Unicorns

Mayor and City Council Members recognized the Honore Ligarde Elementary Lady Unicorns Basketball Team on their undefeated season during the Laredo Boys and Girls Club basketball league. The team has shown remarkable skills and determination resulting in consecutive championships.

Heat Volleyball Academy

Council Members Gilbert Gonzalez and Ruben Gutierrez, along with Mayor and members of the Council, recognized the Heat Volleyball Academy 13’s and 14’s teams earning bids to compete at the 2024 USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship in Dallas, Texas and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Liana Moncivais

Council Member Ruben Gutierrez, along with Mayor and members of the Council, recognized United High School student, Liana Moncivais for becoming City Champ Track & Field in Discus in 2023 and 2024. Competing at the Regional Level, she earned 2nd Place, qualifying her for the State Level Championship.

Arturo Dominguez

Council Member Vanessa Perez, along with Members of the Council, recognized Arturo Dominguez, U.S. Customs Broker, for his efforts during his period as Chairman of the Port of Entry Advisory Committee last year. He has been instrumental in improving Port Laredo initiatives.
